Storage planning varies by region more than the catalogs suggest. Our analysis of the EIA's 2024 RECS finds attached garages in half of Western homes but under a third of Northeastern ones; older Northeast and Midwest housing has plaster walls and shallow closets; humid Southern and coastal climates favor laminate over wood and sealed garage cabinets. A national average is a starting point, not a local price or a local closet. HomeGuide's $70 to $270 per linear foot range spans the same laminate in different markets and different walls. Our analysis of the EIA's 2024 household survey finds an attached garage in 42.9% of occupied U.S. homes, but the share runs from 31.2% in the Northeast to 49.9% in the West, so the garage storage page matters far more in Phoenix than in Boston.
This page covers four things that vary by place: housing stock and wall construction, garage prevalence and size, climate effects on materials, and installer pricing. Oldest housing stock, most plaster, shallowest closets, and the fewest garages at 31.2% per RECS 2024. Expect side-hang rods, converted hall pantries, and basement storage. Rates run high in the Boston-to-Washington corridor; independent cabinet shops often beat franchise pricing. Mudrooms earn their cost in snow.
Newer stock with walk-ins, walk-in pantries, and two-car garages in 30% of homes. Humidity is the design constraint: edge-banded laminate, ventilation, powder-coated garage steel, and cabinets off the slab. Florida and coastal garages are often block walls that need masonry anchors and a hammer drill.
Mixed stock: older cities with plaster and shallow closets, suburbs with drywall and 28.5% two-car garages. Basements take bulk storage and a second pantry; garages hold snow gear and a second refrigerator in 14.5% of homes. Moderate rates; book garage work in spring and closets in late summer.
Most garages of any region at 49.9% and the most three-car garages at 9.4%. Dry interior climates cook overhead storage; coastal areas need rust-resistant hardware. Seismic zones should strap shelving and cabinets and favor wall over overhead racks. Coastal metros sit at the top of every per-foot range.
Older stock means plaster and lath walls, shallow closets of 20 to 22 inches, sloped attic ceilings, and fewer closets overall. Pre-1950 homes in the Northeast and Midwest often have one small closet per bedroom and no pantry; a hall or under-stair closet becomes the pantry and side-hang rods replace standard hanging. Anchoring into plaster needs longer screws into the studs behind it and patience; a pro who has done it will say so.
Newer Southern and Western stock has drywall over wood studs, deep walk-ins, walk-in pantries, and attached garages, the easy case for every product in the catalog. The trade-off is heat and humidity, which the next sections cover. Tell the installer the house age in every request; it changes what they bring and what they quote.
By our count from RECS 2024, a two-car attached garage is in 27.8% of U.S. homes, a one-car garage in 9.2% (12.5% in the Northeast) and a three-or-more-car garage in 6.0%. The regional split is stark: two-car garages in 31.7% of Western and 30.0% of Southern homes against 17.0% in the Northeast, and three-car garages in 9.4% of Western homes against 1.7% in the Northeast. A second refrigerator in the garage is in 15.1% of homes nationally, 18.3% in the West and 8.8% in the Northeast, and among owner-occupied homes with an attached garage the share is 32.0%.
That shapes the market. Garage storage installers are common in the Sun Belt and the Mountain West and scarce in older Eastern cities, where a basement or a rented unit takes the overflow. Prices for a whole-garage system near Fixr's $3,500 average are easiest to find where the garages are.

Humidity is the main variable. Gulf and Southeast closets on exterior walls, and any closet next to a bathroom without a fan, swell laminate edges and move solid wood; edge-banded laminate, a floor gap, and ventilation are the answers, and wood veneer is a risk. Garages in the same regions rust cheap hooks and soften particleboard cabinets standing on damp slabs; powder-coated steel and raised cabinet bases matter. The Southwest and Mountain West are dry and hard on adhesives and finishes near windows; garages there reach 120°F and cook anything on an overhead rack.
Cold climates need mudrooms that dry coats and floors that survive salt, and often keep a second pantry in a cool basement for bulk and canning. Seismic regions on the West Coast should strap shelving and cabinets and prefer wall to overhead storage in garages.
The published per-foot ranges are national bands whose ends map to markets. HomeGuide's $70 to $270 and Bob Vila's $135–$600 per linear foot brand bands put the top end in large coastal metros and the low end in smaller markets. Brand franchises price by territory; an independent cabinet shop in a small Midwest city can build the same laminate closet for the low end of the range. Lead times also vary: a brand's four-to-six-week manufacturing window is national, but installer booking runs longer in fast-growing Sun Belt suburbs in spring.
The custom versus prefab comparison matters more in high-cost markets, where the labor share of a custom quote is largest and a prefab system with a handy installer saves the most.
How they anchor into your wall type, what they do about plaster or block, whether they have installed overhead racks on trusses in houses like yours, how the local humidity affects their material recommendation, their real lead time this season, and whether a permit is needed for anything on your list such as an outlet for closet lighting. An installer who answers all five specifically has done this in your area many times. The request form is the place to ask; the polls show what homeowners in different regions prioritized.

Per foot, often close to double: HomeGuide's $70 to $270 range and Bob Vila's brand bands put coastal metros at the top. The laminate is the same; labor, territory pricing, and design overhead differ. The inventory method applies everywhere, and the payoff from buying only the feet you need is largest where the per-foot rate is highest.
Often. Closets under 24 inches deep cannot take standard front-facing hanging; side-hang rods, angled hangers, or shelf-and-hook layouts replace it. Plaster walls need longer screws into studs and a careful installer. Sloped ceilings need custom-cut panels. Say the house age and depth in the request so the drawing starts from reality.
No. They cluster where garages are common, the Sun Belt and the Mountain West per RECS's garage counts. In older Eastern cities, closet companies and general carpenters handle garage shelving, and prefab track systems installed by a handyman are often the practical route.
Laminate edges swell and solid wood moves when moisture is high, which is common on exterior walls in the Gulf and Southeast and next to bathrooms anywhere. Ask for edge-banded panels, a gap at the floor, and ventilation, and prefer laminate over veneer in damp closets. Cedar-lined closets are a regional tradition that works if the cedar stays unfinished.
Mid-winter for closets, after the January organizing rush, and late fall for garages. Spring is busiest for garages as gear comes out; late summer for closets before the seasonal switch. Booking a closet for February or a garage for November often gets faster scheduling and a more attentive installer.
Yes. Tall shelving and cabinets should be strapped to studs, overhead garage racks are less favored than wall storage, and heavy items go low. Many California jurisdictions require water heater strapping and recommend furniture anchoring; a storage installer there should raise it without being asked.
Ask the installer first; shelving needs none, but a new outlet, a moved wall, or an addition does. Then check the local building department's website.
